At extinguish, we like to hold events, usually one every month or so. They can range from a longer campaign that lasts over several weeks, visiting multiple schools; to one-day rallies; to weekend-long conventions we've either attended or organised ourselves. Check out what all we've done so far:

Tobacco Action Week Contest
November 18 - 24, 2007
Tobacco Action Week’s purpose is to unite youth and young adults together in the fight against the tobacco industry!
The tobacco industry is trying to scam us:
- They pay to put smoking in movies, television and music videos because teens that see their favourite stars smoking are sixteen times more likely to try it themselves.
- They have started to sell chew tobacco with “cool” brands and “fun” flavours (apple, peach, cherry and berry blend) to appeal to youth. But they are not telling us that the concentrations of the cancer-causing chemicals in chew tobacco is much higher than in cigarettes.

‘Don’t Sugar Coat it’ Campaign
February 2007 - Have you ever been to a convenience store, seen flavoured tobacco products, and wondered what they were or how they tasted? This is one of the tobacco industry’s sales tactics that they are most proud of; advertise and hook youth. The goal of the ‘Don’t Sugar Coat It’ campaign was to send a strong message to the tobacco industry; Stop hooking youth on your sleazy products! We toured around Brampton and Mississauga, setting up games and booths in different high schools, to help youth make an educated decision regarding tobacco. Through our display board, trivia game and counter ads we effectively portrayed the tobacco industry’s sugar coated products as harmful to the health and not a safe alternative to smoking.

Integrity Campaign

March 2007 - 20 of us met at the Mississauga Civic Centre to protest against the Tobacco Industry by conducting a march in downtown Mississauga and Brampton. We dressed as Grim Reapers, wore masks and carried coffins to bring awareness of the Tobacco Industry’s lethal marketing strategies. The masks were worn to symbolise how the Tobacco Industry views their customers as a mere dollar amount as opposed to people. The Grim Reapers represented the Tobacco Industry and the coffins illustrated the 44 Ontarians that die each day in Ontario.

Participants also carried four different banners with the following messages:
- “The Tobacco industry says they have integrity…”
- “44 Ontarians die everyday from smoking”
- “1 out of 2 smokers die”
- “By the time you finish reading this, someone will die from smoking”
After the awareness marches in Peel, extinguish met with YAA’s across Central East Ontario and participated in a demonstration to publicize the lack of integrity in the Tobacco Industry. 44 youth dropped dead to symbolize the 44 Ontarians that die each day from smoking. At the end of these large scale demonstrations pedestrians passing by had no doubt that youth from Ontario will not tolerate the tobacco industry’s lack of integrity in their marketing strategies and harmful products.

National Non-Smoking Week

January 21st-27th
January 21st-27th is National Non-Smoking Week (NNSW). Now many of you may be wondering, what is NNSW? Well, this week is one of the BIGGEST anti-tobacco events in Canada that helps motivate those who want to quit and tries to prevent people from starting to smoke.
This week, extinguish has launched a series of hilarious mini-videos on YouTube. If you don’t know what YouTube is, don’t worry we’ll explain. YouTube is a popular video-sharing website, which allows users to upload, share and view free video clips.

France vs. Italy wasn’t the only soccer game teenagers were anticipating in 2006, Peel Cup 06 was an extravaganza in Chinguacousy Park. With food, drinks and one heck of a soccer tournament, Peel cup was ensured to be a success. We tied in an anti-tobacco message in the tournament by associating the negative side effects of cigarettes with sports and athletic ability. At the end of the tournament, team Turner Fenton was successful and participants left with more than just prizes.

The Mayor's Youth Advisory Council of Mississauga and extinguish worked together for the first time to organize a Basketball Tournament at the Frank McKeckney Community Centre. The tournament was to find healthy alternatives to smoking and inform active youth to participate in their schools. A "Drop Dead" demonstration was held by the Peer Leaders informing active youth about tobacco issues. A dance performance by the very popular Motion Sykness as well as a dunk off ensured that the tournament was a success.

"who's bill" and the black-and-white ribbon campaign

May 31st, 2006, extinguish set out to begin selling black and white ribbons along side Youth Action Alliances in different regions in Ontario. Heather Crowe (1948-2006) created the ribbon campaign to raise money and awareness for the Lung Association of Canada. Students were also questioned about the Smoke Free Ontario Act which came into play on May 31st. Posters of "Bill" were put up around high schools. Students were asked to guess who Bill was by the clues given. On May 31st we announced that Bill wasn't a person after all, but the Smoke Free Ontario Act!

April '06 - This was another initiative within our schools, this time to encourage smokers within our schools to go 'smoke free for a day'. We encouraged students to break their bad habit of smoking by making it their ex, like dropping that bad boyfriend or girlfriend. Smokers traded in their cigarettes for extinguish prizes (i.e. gum, t shirts, hoodies, pens, HMV gift certificates, and other great prizes) Non smokers participated in a game, "Moral Rob" to have a chance to win prizes as well.

March '06 - The month of March was a busy yet exciting time for us. The month kicked off with a 3 day conference where all the peer leaders in Ontario met for the first time! The first day was an opportunity to for us to discover what other Youth Action Alliances were doing in their own communities all across Ontario. Next we gathered to listen to guest speakers to help motivate us to continue what we're doing for our peers.
The next day was a full day of workshops for the peer leaders where we learned about various tobacco related issues like spit tobacco and ceremonial tobacco. However, Saturday night was the night for the extinguish crew to shine! We participated in the
talent show and performed our skit, "Dude Where's My Pants?'
Sunday was the big day! The peer leaders assembled and journeyed to Mel Lastman Square dressed as cigarettes and created a giant cigarette and proudly yelled that the Tobacco Industry will no longer continue to control us and we will TAKE ACTION!!

December '05 - Back in December 05, our first ever Peer Leader training took place at the Delta Hotel. It was a 3 day conference where we learned advocating methods to reach youth and met with other Peer Leaders from across Peel. We ended the training with our mission clear and ready to combat the tobacco industry.

January '06 - Some of your peer leaders went to Square One to spread the word about extinguish. A display board was set up in the mall as we spoke with people about our campaign and mission. Also some extinguish prizes were given away!

brampton safe city presentation

January '06 - This was our first presentation to the youth of Brampton. We spoke with teens about the tobacco industry and how they directly targeted them. The teens got interested in our activities such as creating counter ad activities and learning how to count the number of smoking instances in movies. At the end of our presentation the teens were informed about the Tobacco Industry and we were excited that our first extinguish presentation in the city of Brampton was successful!

national non-smoking week

Jan 16 - 24 '06 - This was the first formal introduction of extinguish to our individual schools. Our extinguish display board was set up which introduced our group, logo and key messages. Students participated in an activity where they had to spot their extinguish representative wearing the extinguish T-shirt and answer questions relating to tobacco and have a chance to win extinguish prizes.
