Why?
- Tobacco marketers know that if you haven't started smoking by age 18, chances are you never will! So they try to catch us young and keep us for life.
- Young people underestimate the risk of becoming addicted to nicotine and the tragic health consequences that can follow.
- More than 45,000 people die each year in Canada due to tobacco use that is more deaths due to tobacco use than suicide, AIDS, vehicle collisions, and murder combined.
- Tobacco marketers spend billions of dollars each year to attract young customers by hiding their products in our entertainment – in our movies, on the internet, in fashion magazines, at music concerts and sports events worldwide.
- Only a total ban on tobacco advertising will work – tobacco marketers continue to find ways to work around the restrictions in our current Tobacco Act.
We Need help from our GOVERNMENT
- The Tobacco Act has only put restrictions on tobacco advertising but not a full ban.
- Recently, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced that he would push for a total ban on tobacco marketing in youth media. We need to make sure that it happens!
